At the recent FESSH 2017 Annual Meeting, members of the Department of Hand Surgery at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham presented their experiences with both the Avance® Nerve Graft, the only available human cadaveric nerve allograft; and the AxoGuard Nerve Protector in the treatment of nerve discontinuities and compression neuropathies respectively.

The Avance® Nerve Graft is a decellularised, human derived nerve allograft that can aid in the repair of nerve discontinuities up to 7cm in length whilst offering sensory end outcomes comparable to that of autograft nerve. The team at QEHB summarised that Avance® Nerve Graft could be an effective alternative to autologous harvesting, particularly in patients with neuropathic pain sensation.

The AxoGuard® Nerve Protector is an epineurial nerve wrap created from porcine small intestine submucosa for use in the prevention of scarring and soft tissue attachment around the site of injury. The team recommend that the AxoGuard® Nerve Protector may improve ulnar nerve symptoms in recurrent cases when used as an adjunct therapy and that recurrence rates may also be reduced.
